CPA President and CEO Shannon Watt is joining senior Alberta government officials, industry representatives, and Indigenous leaders on a Canada-Japan energy mission from January 29 to February 6, 2025. Organized by Energy for a Secure Future and supported by the Alberta government, the mission focuses on diversifying Canada’s energy export channels. The undertaking is timely given potential U.S. tariff threats.
The delegation will engage with Japanese government officials and industry associations to explore bilateral energy opportunities and demonstrate the environmental, geopolitical, and economic value of Canadian natural gas liquids, including propane.
Watt is participating in key meetings and panels to discuss the growth potential of Canada’s liquefied natural gas sector, the growing demand for propane exports, and the role of a Canada-Japan energy partnership in advancing low-emission solutions. With its low carbon footprint, Canadian propane is uniquely positioned to support Japan’s decarbonization efforts while enhancing energy security in a complex geopolitical landscape.
The CPA’s inclusion in this mission underscores the growing importance of propane in Canada’s energy exports and its role in addressing global energy needs.
Superior Propane and Propane Levac have announced the arrival of 100% renewable propane to deliver to their customers – Canadian firsts!
Superior Propane announced a partnership with the City of Chilliwack to gradually replace its conventional propane supply with a renewable propane alternative for its fleet. Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove stated that Superior Propane is demonstrating real-world performance and emissions reduction potential of renewable propane, noting that the transition to renewable propane was smooth, with the vehicles continuing to deliver the same power and performance as before.
Propane Levac announced the first railcar of renewable propane to be broadly marketed in Canada. Their supply of renewable propane will be used for multiple customers and multiple applications, including agriculture, cooking and home energy. Clint Cameron, Director, Ontario Federation of Agriculture and OFA Energy Committee Chair, welcomed the arrival, stating that it will advance Ontario’s energy infrastructure and support cleaner energy sources, noting that a mix of alternative and conventional energy sources is critical to support sustainable growth for agriculture, rural Ontario and the province.
Propane Levac held a special event to mark the celebration, with more than 100 guests! The CPA was in attendance along with notable guests, the Hon. Ted Hsu, MPP for Kingston and the Islands; the Hon. Francis Drouin, Member of Parliament, World Liquid Gas Association’s Business Development Director Cinch Munson, Beavertails founder and CEO Grant Hooker and Association Québécoise du Propane Executive Director Stéphanie Paré.

The one certainty regarding President Trump’s threat to invoke across the board tariffs on Canadian goods going into the United States is the uncertainty of it all.
With one out of every seven barrels in the States coming from Canada, our most recent research shows that a 25% tariff on exports to the U.S. would cost the industry, and ultimately consumers, close to $500 million. See Trump’s energy actions on his first day | BOE Report.
The CPA is working closely with our American counterparts, the National Propane Gas Association as well as other like-minded industry associations to advocate against these tariffs and we will continue to educate key members of the provincial and federal governments on the impacts of propane tariffs.
The Competition Bureau is seeking public feedback on proposed guidelines for environmental claims, including new greenwashing provisions introduced through amendments to the Act on June 20, 2024. Interested parties can share their input on the proposed guidelines by emailing Competition Bureau Canada before February 28, 2025.
The CPA provided feedback during the 2024 summer consultation and will submit additional feedback to address concerns with the proposed guidelines. Previous CPA feedback can be reviewed here. The CPA also supported a coalition letter in September highlighting the proposal’s potential negative impacts on the Canadian economy. Advocacy initiatives against the proposal will continue, along with strategy and messaging confirmed through the CPA Producer Council. The federal incentive program for zero-emission vehicles (iZEV) has been paused earlier than planned, effective January 10, due to a lack of funding. While the program was originally set to pause at the end of March, it is unclear when funding will resume. The medium- and heavy-duty vehicle incentive program (iMHZEV) remains active until March 31, 2026, but is also subject to available funding.
While funding for electric school buses through the federal Zero Emission Transit Fund remains unaffected, practical problems with electric school buses have been reported.
The range capacity of electric buses suffers greatly in cold weather and the supply chain for electric school buses has been problematic. Last fall, PEI ordered 30 diesel school buses to offset the slow delivery of electric school buses from its supplier.
On January 13 in Huntsville, ON, students had to be evacuated from an electric school bus due to fire. Thankfully no one was hurt. See story: Students, driver safe as Huntsville school bus engulfed in fire – North Bay News
The Clean Fuels Fund (CFF) has been extended to March 31, 2030, with a re-tooled framework. Interested parties can register for Transportation and Fuels Decarbonization Programs through its online portal here. The portal provides a single point of access to the various programs.
The application process is continuous and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Natural Resources Canada will accept applications until funding requests exceed available resources, at which point the process will pause. For questions or inquiries about the CFF program or portal, please email: Natural Resources Canada.
The Clean Electricity Regulations (CER) were published in the Canada Gazette, Part II on December 18, 2024. Full details, including the regulations, regulatory impact analysis statement, backgrounders on reliability and affordability, third-party modelling, and offsets, are available at Clean Electricity Regulations – Canada.ca. The final CER sets emission limits for electricity generation starting in 2035, aiming for a net-zero grid by 2050.
