The CPA is running a marketing campaign this month based on the poll the CPA commissioned this past summer that revealed the majority of Canadians have a positive perception of propane – despite government focus and subsidies on electricity.
The campaign included two half-page ads in The Hill Times in the first two weeks of December. A social media campaign is running throughout December on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. Please follow the CPA on these media channels to amplify the messaging.
The CPA reinforced messaging from the national poll with a bold op-ed: ‘Canadians Deserve Long-Term Energy Solutions, Not Short-Term Fixes.’ CPA President and CEO Shannon Watt writes, “A two-month tax holiday on non-essentials like game consoles and snack foods is a short-sighted attempt to solve Canada’s affordability crisis. What Canadians need is a long-term, practical approach to reducing basic living costs. This winter, the government needs to remove taxes on lower-emission home energy sources like propane.”
Regardless of education, income, region, or political leaning, those aware of propane see it as a lower-emission, cost-effective alternative to heating oil and diesel, particularly for rural and remote communities. These results align with a similar 2020 poll, showing that Canadians continue to strongly support propane, especially as a preferred alternative energy choice.
Our advocacy has underscored that all Canadians, no matter where they live, should have access to lower-emission energy to heat their homes and businesses. In rural, remote, and Indigenous communities lacking access to natural gas and electricity, propane is vital in delivering affordable energy.
The poll results also highlight that some Canadians have yet to form an opinion on propane. This represents a tremendous opportunity for the CPA and members to continue to talk to Canadians about the important role of propane as an alternative energy source.
For more information on the poll findings, please contact your government relations team: Allan Murphy, SVP GR; Katie Kachur, VP, GR, West; Chris Crawford, VP, GR, Ontario and Manitoba; and Melissa Michaud, VP Operations, Quebec.
National Propane Day is just around the corner on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. This annual event celebrates propane’s vital role in powering Canada with an affordable, reliable, and versatile energy source.

We hope you’ll join us to make this year’s celebration impactful and showcase propane’s contributions to communities across the country.

CPA’s President and CEO, Shannon Watt, has joined other energy sector leaders in urging the federal government to withdraw its proposed emissions cap. A joint letter, signed by industry leaders, will be sent to key decision-makers at both provincial and federal levels. It will also be published on the Calgary Chamber of Commerce website and shared on social media.
The chamber is still accepting signatures, so CPA members are encouraged to share this initiative within their networks. Companies can add their support by signing the letter here.
On Nov. 26, Vancouver City Council debated a motion to overturn a four-year ban on renewable natural gas, natural gas, and potentially hydrogen for heating in new construction. The ban, introduced in 2022, was part of efforts to meet the city’s climate targets.
Councillor Brian Montague proposed reversing the ban last July, citing concerns about housing affordability and speeding up construction. However, a staff report indicated the change would not impact affordability or construction timelines.
During the council meeting, 142 speakers shared their views, with most opposing natural gas due to climate concerns. Supporters argued that natural gas is a more economical and practical option. According to city data, burning natural gas in buildings accounts for 57 per cent of Vancouver’s carbon emissions.
After two days of debate, the vote ended in a 5–5 tie, meaning the motion to lift the ban was defeated. Natural gas will remain restricted for heating and hot water in new construction but will still be allowed for cooking and fireplaces.

On November 26-27, 2024, CPA Ontario Committee members and VP of Government Relations for Ontario and Manitoba, Chris Crawford, attended the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) Annual General Meeting. This event provided an opportunity to discuss issues affecting the agricultural sector and engage with OFA members.
As part of the CPA’s participation, Crawford represented the propane industry on an energy panel titled, “Powering Agriculture: The Critical Role of Energy Affordability on the Farm.” The panel included representatives from Enbridge, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association, the Canadian Biogas Association, and Hydro One. During the discussion, Crawford highlighted the importance of propane in Ontario’s energy mix, particularly for rural and remote communities. He also addressed challenges facing the propane industry, including half-load restrictions, a shortage of gas fitters, and the need for propane to be treated fairly.
Thank you to the following CPA members for attending the OFA AGM:
During his recent trip to Nepal, where he hiked to Mount Everest Base Camp and climbed Lobuche East, a 6,000-meter mountain, the CPA’s VP of Government Relations for Ontario and Manitoba, Chris Crawford raised over $1,000 for the Ottawa Senators Community Foundation. The foundation supports local youth in the Ottawa area.
To thank him for his fundraising efforts, the Ottawa Senators Community Foundation invited Crawford to a reception with Ottawa Senators alumni Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, and Chris Phillips. Way to go Chris!
