Interest in data centres is growing rapidly across Canada, driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure investment. As governments and private operators expand data centre capacity, attention is increasingly turning to energy reliability and backup power solutions—creating a clear opportunity for propane.
The CPA has learned that the federal government is developing a request for proposal that would support the build of data centres in Canada.
During CPA’s November Lobby Day in Ottawa, discussions with the Office of the Minister of Artificial Intelligence included propane replacing diesel as a backup energy source for data centres. Officials encouraged the CPA to engage on the upcoming RFP to ensure propane is considered.
On December 15, CPA’s Allan Murphy, SVP Government Relations and Chris Crawford, CPA VP Government Relations, Ontario and Manitoba, met with Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, Joël Lightbound’s office, and reiterated the importance of including propane as a cleaner, reliable backup fuel for public AI and data centre infrastructure.
The CPA will now be meeting with the Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for Hosting Services, whose portfolio includes federal data centres.
In September, the Government of Canada announced its intent to make targeted amendments to the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) to strengthen the resiliency of Canada’s low-carbon fuel sector while maintaining a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The amendments are intended to ensure the Canadian market can continue supplying reliable and sufficient quantities of low-carbon-intensity fuels.
As part of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s consultation on the proposed amendments, the CPA submitted formal comments outlining industry perspectives and priorities.
To support stakeholder awareness, Environment and Climate Change Canada also hosted an information session on December 18 to provide an overview of the proposed changes. Presentation materials from the session can be viewed here.
