The fall of 2024 has been a busy time for elections. Recent elections occurred in British Columbia, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan and there could be more in the coming months. Nova Scotia declared an early election for Nov. 26 and Ontario may have one by next June. The federal election, set for October 2025, could happen earlier because the governing Liberals have a minority government.
To prepare our advocacy, the CPA contacted all parties in N.B., B.C. and Sask., identifying key issues and solutions for the propane sector in the province.
Despite the ongoing campaigns, the CPA continues to meet with elected and non-elected officials at all levels; members are encouraged to contact their MLAs as part of these advocacy efforts.
In provinces holding elections, connections will be made with the incoming or returning governments once the campaigns have ended. CPA messaging around propane as an affordable, reliable and cleaner energy source will continue to underscore advocacy and communications. Watch for in-depth coverage of the elections in the next newsletter.
In recent weeks, the CPA met with Ontario government ministerial staff to highlight the importance of auto propane in Ontario.
CPA Vice-Chair Jason Cooper and VP of Government Relations for Ontario and Manitoba, Chris Crawford met with staff from Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries, Sam Oosterhoff and Minister of Red Tape Reduction, Mike Harris. Discussions included the benefits of auto propane and the removal of the 4.3-cent-per-litre fuel tax.
The CPA looks forward to continuing these discussions with the Minister’s Office at Queen’s Park and promoting auto propane as an important transportation fuel in Ontario.
On October 8, 2024, CPA’s President and CEO, Shannon Watt and VP of Government Relations for Ontario and Manitoba, Chris Crawford visited Sarnia for a tour of Enbridge’s Sarnia Terminal. The visit included a roundtable discussion about Line 5 with CEO Gregory Ebel. Also attending were local MPP Bob Bailey (Sarnia-Lambton), Ontario Agent General in Chicago Earl Provost, and several stakeholders.
Line 5 is important for many industries, including the propane sector. Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline currently carries about 80,000 barrels per day (bpd) of natural gas liquids and more than 400,000 bpd of crude oil from the Superior terminal in Wisconsin to the refining hub in Sarnia. The natural gas liquids supplied on Line 5 makes up about 90 per cent of the feedstock used to produce specification propane at the Sarnia Fractionation Plant. Losing access to NGL feedstock would threaten over 50,000 bpd of production in Sarnia, which is at least 70 per cent of Eastern Canada’s domestic production.
The CPA will continue to work with Enbridge on this important issue.
